Novel Study

The Midnight Fox

 

Format: You have two options when completing this novel study. It can be handwritten or you can use a computer and word process your report. In either case, all writing must be double spaced and all headings must be underlined. I expect good-copy quality writing! The completed novel study must be submitted in a duo-tang.

Neatness and Mechanics 10 marks

Part 1) Title Page: Include the title of the book, author, your name, grade, date, teacher, and an illustration. 10 marks

Part 2) Setting:

A) In paragraph form, describe the various settings of the story. Where and when did the story take place? When possible use direct quotes from the story to enhance your description. Select one setting from the story that you feel is very important and explain why it is so important. 10 marks

Choose one of the following activities.

B) Draw a story map that shows some of the places mentioned in the novel. When you have done the illustrations, neatly colour the map. Make a title. Can you provide a key that shows directions? Does your map require a legend to explain symbols that you have used? On the map, write brief descriptions of what occurred in each place shown. 10 marks

C) The ravine is a secret place for Tom. Describe a secret place of your own. Where is it? How often do you visit it? Why is it important to you? Draw an illustration of your secret place. 10 marks

Part 3) Characters:

A) Under the heading Important Characters, list the names of all the important characters mentioned in the novel. Consider each one's role. Rank them on the basis of their importance to the overall story (e.g. 1 being not very important and 5 being very important.) Beneath the character's name, explain why you gave them the rating that you did. 10 marks

B) Give a detailed description of the main character and two supporting characters. In paragraph form, describe their physical attributes (what they look like) and their emotional attributes (what type of personality do they have). Include a coloured picture of the three characters. 10 marks

Choose one of the following activities. 5 marks

C) Find five quotations about the character you liked best in the novel. Explain why those quotes are the most significant. Present them in an attractive manner.

D) Draw a detailed time line that demonstrates the changes the main character goes through during the novel.

E) Create a sociogram that shows the relationship between three or four characters in the novel. Draw pictures of the characters and connect them to each other with lines. On the lines write sentences that describe the relationship that exists between the characters.

Part 4) Plot:

Choose one of the following.

A) Create a Plot Profile

Consider again all the events that occurred in the story. Read over your chapter summaries or scan the book to help you with this task. Plot the events from beginning to end. Make sure that you identify the climax of the story (the point at which action in the story culminates or reaches its highest level of intensity).

B) New Chapter

Write chapter 20 for the novel. The continuation should pick up where the book ended and it should be realistic and make sense. Two pages minimum, double spaced. Describe what happens to Tom in the future. How did his experience on the farm affect his life? What type of person is Tom now? What are his interests?

Part 5) Literary Devices:

A) What is a simile? Define it and find examples of this literary device in the novel and list as many as you can. 5 marks

B) What is foreshadowing? Define it and find examples of foreshadowing in the novel. 5 marks

C) What is irony? Define it. Are there any examples of irony in The Midnight Fox? 5 marks

Part 6) Activities: Select one activity from the list below.

A) Interview a character in the story. You must include at least 15 questions and answers. 10 marks

B) Headlines. Petie loved to write crazy headlines. Write five interesting headlines that accurately describe Tom's adventures on the farm. 10 marks

C) Write a letter to one of the characters in the novel. See your Communicating Skills Book for an example of how to write a friendly letter. 10 marks

D) Create a "Wanted Poster" for the black fox. Describe the fox's appearance. Explain why it is wanted and where it was last seen. State who to contact and how much the reward is. 10 marks

E) Create a diorama. Think of an event from the story that you thought was interesting or exciting. Create a diorama that shows the event you have chosen. You may use any materials that you want (e.g. construction paper, fabric, paint, felts, wallpaper, carpet scraps, actual furniture from doll houses, toys, etc.) Make sure all five faces of the box are decorated and at least one character is represented. 10 marks
