• Space Missions Mini Units - Adapted by Matt Arnold (Dave Dixon's student teacher Spring 2004).
  • Space Missions - A webquest requiring students to research either a manned or unmanned space mission.
  • Space Missions 2 - A simplified webquest requiring students to work with a partner to research space related areas of study. The product is a booklet summarizing their findings.
  • Apollo 11 - Task: Interview a parent or grandparent about their recollections of Apollo 11 and the effect it had on people at the time. Students will prepare a list of questions in advance and then write a one page, third person, newspaper style report.
  • Julie Payette - Task: Students will research Canadian Astronaut Julie Payette and answer a series of questions regarding her and one of her missions. Intended to highlight not only Canadian contributions to Space exploration but specifically the increasing role played by women.
• Space Travel Project - A four week unit which naturally follows the solar system unit. Parts of this unit are adapted from the Space Flight Project developed by Joan Berger. Canadian elements of the unit were developed by Dave Dixon. Includes learning outcomes covered for each week of the project.
• The History of our understanding of Space - A "jigsaw" project where students research a culture or person and report to the students what they have learned. Collectively, students get a better understanding of how our understanding of the cosmos has changed through the centuries. Students end up making a time line based on reports given by the class. developed by K. Rajala (.pdf format)
• Flight Experiment - Task: Experiment to find out about flight using paper airplanes. Do it as a scientific experiment. Write up your results.

Life Science

• Factors Affecting Human Growth - Students create a multi-media slide show showing things that contribute to their growth and quality of life. Meant for the grade seven life science curriculum. A multi-media marking criteria is included. Developed by K. Rajala.
• Classification - a series of activities dealing with some ot the introductory concepts of taxonomy. Designed to address some ot the intended learning outcomes for grade 6. Developed by K. Rajala. (.pdf format)
• Animal Classification - With a partner, students are to create a Clarisworks Slide Show on a vertebrate species from the Animal Kingdom. This multimedia slide show is to be presented to the class. Adapted for Clarisworks with addtitional resources by Dave Dixon. Original unit by Carle and Cullin.
• Meal Analysis - A student plans, prepares, and cooks a meal and then analyzes the components of the meal. Designed to address the grade 7 ILO: demonstrates a basic understanding of some of the factors affecting the growth of an organism. Based on the work of Jon Wheatley.
• Target Foods - Students place labels or drawings of foods on a "target" based on nutritional value.
• Food and Nutrition - A long list of different types of food and nutrition related research topics giving students a wide range of different types/styles of presentations.
